Nora Mae’s Story of Resilience
Meet Nora Mae Hammonds, a bright, lively 3.5-year-old who inspires everyone she meets with her determination and sass! From engaging with her sisters to the simple joy of lights, shadows, books, and games like peek-a-boo, which makes her “trach laugh,” Nora finds magic in everyday moments. Her independence shines as she beams with pride whenever she accomplishes a task on her own.
Nora’s journey began with a fight for her life. Born not breathing, she was diagnosed with Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE), a condition that brought a host of challenges, including Cerebral Palsy, and Cortical Visual Impairment, among others. But Nora’s incredible spirit proves that challenges don’t define her—they fuel her resilience. She works hard every day, whether it’s building new skills or learning to self-regulate her autonomic system.
Thanks to her amazing medical team, her loving family, and the steadfast support of Hands of Hope, Nora continues to thrive. The Hands of Hope team has been a constant in her life, providing care, resources, and a listening ear for her family. From after-hours support to seeing Nora as a whole person, their dedication has made all the difference.
“As a parent of a medically complex child, having support from people who ‘get it’ can make all the difference,” says Nora’s mom. “Knowing that a skilled nurse or a palliative care doctor is accessible to us whenever a circumstance arises is such a comforting feeling when your little one is struggling.”
Nora’s journey is a powerful reminder to “Presume Competence.” Her progress—from navigating a single switch to mastering 8-button communication devices and now trialing eye gaze technology—shows the incredible potential within every individual when we believe in their abilities. Nora has so much to say, and so much to offer if we can get past stereotypes about appearance and understand that what we’ve “heard” or “read” is not a one size fits all model.To Nora, every day is a chance to defy expectations, solve problems, and conquer new challenges with a smile.
